All features of the referee app for Apple Watch & iPhone | What's the Score, Bro?

All features of What's the Score, Bro? — the referee app for Apple Watch and iPhone

What's the Score, Bro? is a referee app for soccer. On the Apple Watch, you have match time, stoppage time, goals, cards, time penalties, substitutions, and penalty shootouts right on your wrist, allowing you to log every event in under three seconds. On the iPhone, this data transforms into a colorful match report featuring movement analysis, sprints, fitness data, AI analysis, and a dashboard for your entire refereeing career.

On this page, you will find all features, categorized by Apple Watch and iPhone. Features marked with PRO are part of the Pro version. Everything else is free.

Apple Watch: Officiating from your wrist

The Apple Watch app is your tool on the pitch. It runs independently of the iPhone during the match, keeps accurate time even with the display dimmed (Always-On), and alerts you via vibration when important moments arise.

Match timer with automatic stoppage time tracking

  • Start the match with a tap: Tap the watch to start the game.
  • Stoppage time calculator: Tap the watch once during interruptions—such as injuries, goal celebrations, or substitutions. The official match timer keeps running and flashes, while a yellow counter tracks the duration of the stoppage. When play resumes, this time is automatically added to the stoppage time for the current half.
  • Keep an eye on stoppage time: The accumulated stoppage time is displayed in yellow next to the main timer. On large watches, it shows minutes and seconds; on small watches, it shows minutes only.
  • Reminder during an interruption: While the game is paused, the watch vibrates briefly every five seconds so you don't forget to resume play.
  • Alarm at the end of regular time: Once regular time has elapsed, the watch vibrates noticeably and continues counting in red. You can now end the half or the match at any time.
  • Second alarm when stoppage time is reached: When the actual elapsed time matches the calculated stoppage time, the watch vibrates again and the display turns green.
  • Countdown or open-ended timing: Each half runs as a countdown. Alternatively, the clock can count upwards without a time limit, for example during tournaments or practice matches.
  • Flexible match formats: 1, 2, 3, or 4 periods, each lasting 1 to 99 minutes. This makes the app suitable for men's, women's, and youth matches, as well as futsal-style games and indoor tournaments.
  • Running match time: The cumulative match time is displayed below the main clock.
  • Break timer with alarm: A yellow break timer runs during the halftime interval. Optionally, the watch vibrates after a set duration (1 to 15 minutes), and the timer turns red.
  • Reset timer: If you started the match too early, you can reset the current half to the kick-off or the preceding break.
  • Match phase display: The current match phase is always displayed at the top: 1st half, 2nd half, period, break, 1st and 2nd extra time, penalty shootout, or stoppage.

Score and goals

  • Goal with a single tap: Tapping a team's display registers a goal. A long press cancels it.
  • Team colors: The score is displayed using the jersey colors of the home and away teams (choice of 15 colors).
  • Mark kick-off: Double-tap a team to indicate who has the kick-off. The indicator switches automatically at halftime. You can reset it before extra time and penalty shootouts.
  • Record goalscorer PRO: In Pro Mode, select the jersey number using the number pad or directly from the grid of players currently on the pitch.
  • Penalty goals and own goals PRO: Any goal can be marked as a penalty or an own goal. Own goals are automatically credited to the correct team.
  • Minute and location are saved: For every goal, the app saves the match minute, the stoppage-time minute, and—if location tracking is active—the location on the pitch.

Cards with reasons

  • Yellow, Yellow-Red, and Red PRO: Personal penalties are recorded in seconds, including the jersey number, match minute, and reason.
  • Reasons based on IFAB Laws of the Game:
    • Yellow: reckless foul play, unsporting behavior, dissent by word or action, persistent infringement, delaying the restart of play, failure to respect the required distance, entering or leaving the field of play without permission.
    • Red: serious foul play, biting or spitting, violent conduct, offensive or insulting language or gestures, denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by a foul (DOGSO-F) or handball (DOGSO-H).
  • Custom card reasons: On the iPhone, you can create your own text entries for yellow or red cards and hide standard reasons you don't need. The fewer active reasons there are, the faster the input process.
  • Automatic yellow-red: Based on the lineup, the app detects a second yellow card, automatically converts it into a yellow-red card, and marks the player as sent off.
  • Cards for team officials: The head coach (C) and up to three assistant coaches or team staff members (A1 to A3) can be cautioned or sent off from the technical area.
  • Card overview on the main screen: Depending on the clock size, you can see up to five cards per team directly below the phase indicator, with red cards shown first.

Time penalties and sin-bin

  • Multiple simultaneous time penalties PRO: Each time penalty has its own timer. The duration can be set between 1 and 10 minutes.
  • Time penalties pause with the game: If the game is interrupted, the time penalty timers also pause.
  • Countdown ring in the toolbar: A yellow ring indicates the remaining time; if there are multiple time penalties, the count is displayed.
  • Expiry alert: When a time penalty ends, the watch vibrates and the icon changes to a green checkmark. Tapping "Bring player back" allows the player to return to the pitch.
  • Second time penalty: After a second time penalty, the player cannot return. You decide whether another player is substituted in for them or if the team continues playing shorthanded.
  • Overview of all time penalties: For each player, you see the jersey, reason, remaining time, and a progress bar.

Substitutions and lineups

  • Lineups on the watch PRO: Enter the starting lineup and substitutes using the number pad; separate multiple numbers with commas. Alternatively, use dictation or scribble. Spoken numbers in German and English are automatically converted into digits.
  • Captain and goalkeeper are marked on the jersey.
  • Error check: The app immediately detects duplicate numbers and lineups with more than eleven starting players. If a lineup is active, the match only starts once both teams have players on the pitch.
  • Multiple substitutions PRO: Substitute multiple players in and out in a single step. If using a lineup, tap the jerseys; otherwise, enter the numbers.
  • Rolling substitutions (flying subs) PRO: Substituted players may return to the game, as is common in youth and recreational football. If this option is disabled, they are barred from re-entering.
  • DFB Youth Mode PRO: Substitutes can be selected as goalscorers and penalty takers.
  • Add players later: Late-arriving players can be added to the bench during the match. This appears in the match report as a "Late squad addition."
  • Substitution counter: On the main screen, PL displays the number of substituted players, and SU shows the number of substitution events per team.

Extra time and penalty shootout

  • Knockout matches PRO: If the score is tied after regular time, the app automatically proceeds to extra time (two periods of 1 to 15 minutes) or directly to a penalty shootout.
  • Penalty shootout only: For cup and youth matches without extra time.
  • Penalty shootout with goal display: Five dots per team turn green (goal) or red (miss). Additional dots appear during sudden death.
  • Whose turn is it? The app indicates which team is taking the kick and alternates automatically. You determine which team goes first with a double-tap.
  • Automatic conclusion: Once the penalty shootout is decided, the app ends and saves the match. All penalty takers and their results are listed in the match report.

Voice notes for cards and time penalties

  • Note directly on the watch PRO: For every yellow or red card and every time penalty, you can record up to ten seconds of audio—such as specific words, circumstances, or witnesses for the special report.
  • Level indicator, re-recording, and deletion directly on the watch.
  • Listen on watch and iPhone: The voice note is attached to the event in the match report and can be played back at any time.

Live match report and notebook on the watch

  • Match report accessible at any time: All events in chronological order: kick-off, goals, cards with reasons, time penalties, substitutions, halftime with stoppage time, extra time, penalty shootout, and match end.
  • Correct and delete PRO: In the lineup view, you can delete events by swiping or assign them to a different player. The score and player status update automatically.
  • Notebook PRO: All personal penalties and substitutions at a glance in a jersey grid, plus live fitness data and active time penalties.

Match suspension and abandonment

  • Suspending the match: In the event of a thunderstorm, floodlight failure, or spectator issues, the match time stops completely, and the duration of the interruption is recorded. Play resumes from the same point afterwards. Every interruption is logged in the match report.
  • Abandon match: After a confirmation prompt, the match ends and is saved with the minute of abandonment recorded.

End of match, saving, and rating

  • Automatically saved: After the final whistle, the match data is stored on the watch and sent to the iPhone. The watch confirms "Saved," "Sent to iPhone," and "Received by iPhone."
  • Rate match: Immediately after the match, you rate your experience using 😀, 😐, or ☹️. This data is used to generate your personal performance statistics on the iPhone.
  • Saved matches on the watch: List of all matches, including results in team colors, the full match report, and the rating. Individual matches or all matches can be re-synchronized with the iPhone.
  • Reset match: Discards a match without saving it. Settings, colors, and the lineup are retained.

Fitness tracking during the match

  • Workout starts automatically at kickoff PRO: The workout starts at kickoff, pauses at halftime, and ends at the final whistle. It is saved to Apple Health and counts towards your activity rings.
  • Live metrics on the watch: Distance, peak and average speed, heart rate, running power in watts, and active calories.
  • Minute-by-minute metrics: Heart rate, power, distance, and speed are recorded every minute and analyzed on the iPhone.

Match location, weather, and GPS

  • Automatic match location PRO: At kickoff, the app records the sports field, postal code, and location.
  • Weather at kickoff: Temperature and weather conditions via Apple Weather.
  • GPS movement path: Your movements on the pitch are precisely recorded, forming the basis for the heatmap, movement path playback, and sprint analysis on the iPhone. Recording pauses at halftime.
  • Events with location: Goals, cards, and time penalties are recorded along with their location on the pitch.

Always-On, vibration, Action button, and complication

  • Always-On display: Even when the display is dimmed, match time, the break timer, and time penalties continue to run accurately and are displayed in a power-saving mode.
  • Continues running in the background: The app remains active throughout the entire match, even without fitness tracking.
  • Vibration alarms: For the end of the match, stoppage time, the end of the break, expired penalties, and as a reminder during stoppages. You don't have to keep checking the time.
  • Action button (Apple Watch Ultra): "Start Match" opens the app directly via the Action button.
  • Time-limit timer via Action button: During the match, the Action button starts a 10-second timer with a color bar and vibrations at 5, 8, and 10 seconds—for example, for throw-in timing and the 8-second rule for goalkeepers. This feature requires fitness tracking to be enabled.
  • Quick-start complication: The app is available as a round or corner complication directly on the watch face.

iPhone: Analysis, statistics, and settings

The iPhone app automatically receives match data from the Apple Watch and turns it into a clear match report with analysis. This is also where you configure the watch settings and manage lineups and reasons for cards.

FAQ

How does the app calculate stoppage time?
To record an interruption, tap the watch once. The official match time continues to run while the interruption is tracked in the background and added to the stoppage time for the current half. The accumulated stoppage time appears in yellow next to the clock. Once regular time expires, the watch vibrates and continues counting in red. When the calculated stoppage time is reached, it vibrates again and the display turns green.
Do I need my iPhone during the match?
No. The app runs independently on the Apple Watch during the match. After the final whistle, the match data is saved on the watch and sent to the iPhone. If the iPhone is out of range, the match data remains on the watch and can be synchronized later.
What is included in the free version?
The free version includes the match clock with stoppage time calculation and haptic alerts, countdown or open-ended timing, 1 to 4 match periods, customizable match duration, a break timer with alerts, tap-based score tracking, kick-off markers, jersey colors, and match saving/synchronization with the iPhone.
Can I try Pro for free?
Yes. You can try the Pro subscription for free initially and cancel at any time during the trial period. Alternatively, Pro is available as a one-time lifetime purchase.
Does the app support sin bins (timed suspensions) and re-entry substitutions for youth soccer?
Yes. You can run multiple timed suspensions simultaneously, each with its own timer and a duration of 1 to 10 minutes. Rolling substitutions (flying subs) can be enabled, and in DFB youth mode, substitutes can also be recorded as goalscorers.
What fitness data does the app record?
With fitness tracking enabled, the Apple Watch records a workout including heart rate, distance, speed, running power (in watts), and active calories. This data is saved to Apple Health. On your iPhone, you can view the metrics minute-by-minute, including speed zones, sprints, a heatmap, and a performance score.
Can I upload my matches to Strava?
Yes. Once you connect your Strava account, the app automatically uploads every new match as a soccer activity, including the GPS route, heart rate, and performance data. Individual matches can also be uploaded manually.
How do lineups get into the app?
You can enter the lineup using the number pad on the watch or iPhone; on the watch, you can also use dictation or Scribble. Additionally, the app can import lineups via a link from association and referee software. A Lineup API is available for associations for this purpose.
Which languages is the app available in?
The app is available in German as Wie steht's, Brudi? and in English as What's the Score, Bro?
